Stephen W. Sawyer is Chair of the History Department and co-founder of the Urban Studies program at the American University of Paris. He specializes in urban political history with an emphasis on the role of cities in territorial and state construction in the Atlantic world. He is currently preparing a book manuscript for publication on the history of the Paris Municipality from 1789-1880 and in recent articles has begun exploring trans-Atlantic urban development and the structural role of cities in defining political modernities.
