Pierre Rosanvallon



Pierre Rosanvallon is the « Modern and Contemporary History of Politics » Professor at the Collège de France and a directeur d’études at the EHESS. In 2002, he founded « la République des Idées », a think thank that wants to contribute to an intellectual refoundation in France and Europe.
He has researched the French political model, and the history of French democracy in several volumes. In English: The New Social Question: Rethinking the Welfare State (Princeton University Press, 2000), Democracy Past and Future (Columbia University Press, 2006), The Demands of Liberty : Civil Society in France since the Revolution (Cambridge University Press, 2007).
He is now working on a trilogy on the transformations of democracy in the 21st century. Two volumes have been published in English: Counter-democracy: Politics in an Age of Distrust (Cambridge University Press, 2008) and Democratic Legitimacy: Impartiality, Reflexivity, Proximity (Princeton University Press, 2011).
Pierre Rosanvallon also leads a research program on democratic universalism.
