Catherine Guesde



Catherine Guesde is managing editor for Books & Ideas.

A former student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, she holds a doctorate in philosophy from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne where has taught aesthetics. Also a member of the editorial board of Volume ! The French Journal of Popular Music Studies, she specializes in the study of popular music, namely extreme metal and noise music. She has received the IASPM-BFE (International Association for the Study of Popular Music) young researcher prize in 2019.

She is the author of “L’éthique du hardcore” (in Multitudes 51, printemps 2013), and of “Inconfort et création” (in WikiCréation); she has co-written ’The Most Beautiful Ugly Sound in the World’: à l’écoute de la noise with Pauline Nadrigny (Musica Falsa, 2018).
